For this activity you will learn and practice some fun vocabulary unique to the land down under. Use the attachment of vocabulary words to create a product from the list below. Remember, the goal is to use as much of the Aussie Vocabulary as possible while having your writing make sense too!

Your choices are:

A. Three postcards from Australia. The front should be a "picture" from Australia of something you would go to see in Australia and the backside of each postcard should be your writing about what you are seeing and doing as you visit Australia.

B. A letter to a friend or teacher about everything you are seeing and doing in Australia.

C. A dialogue written between two people visiting or meeting in Australia.

Our standards require us to know the following features of Canada and Australia:

Canada: St. Lawrence River, Hudson Bay, the Great Lakes, Canadian Shield, and the Rocky Mountains.

Australia: Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Ayers Rock and Great Victoria Desert.

Take notes organized through four major ideas: 1. What groups were fighting during the civil war and what event culuminated the civil war? 2. What was Mao's first major policy of communism and what was it's impact? 3. What policy did Mao enforce to overcome public discontent of communism? 4. What was the protest at Tianamen Square?

Write your answers to #132-143 on notebook paper. Don't forget to put your name and social studies class period.

Read the attached pages about environmental issues in Europe. This reading explains two pollution problems in Europe--but our standard requires us to understand three... The third pollution issue we need to know is the cause of Acid Rain! Be sure you understand what causes acid rain. The NINE physical features that are required to receive an "80" on the test include: Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Sierra Madres Mountains, Andes Mountains, Amazon River, Panama Canal and the Atacama Desert.

The additional features should be selected from the following from our mapping activity: Rio Grande, Occidental Sierra Madres, Mexican Plateau, Lake Maracaibo, Yucatan Peninsula, Oriental Sierra Madres, Lake Titcaca, Patagonia, Pampas, Amazon Basin, Lake Nicaragua, and Tierra del Fuego..

Complete a physical map of Latin America on the hand-out that identifies all of the physical features hinted at in the attached list of questions. Be sure to use the key as you draw the features onto the map. You will also need a physical map of Latin America from one of the textbooks.

Each student only needs to read their assigned topic and answer the 3-5 questions in writing BEFORE coming to class on the due date. THIS ASSIGNMENT IS NON-REDEEMABLE meaning if it is not complete when arriving in class on the due date the zero CANNOT be made up. This assignment is to prepare each student for an activity taking place during class on the due date.
